ABOUT ME

DANIEL WRETHAM - LANDSCAPE PHOTOGRAPHER

I'm a Dorset based landscape photographer and I have always had a keen interest in photography since I first picked up a camera in my early teens. I started taking it seriously in 2010 and have been hooked ever since. I have a great passion for Dorset's coastline and the surrounding area and I love taking seascapes and the beauty of the landscapes of Britain. Chasing light has become an all consuming and life changing experience for me and I can't see myself ever stopping.

All of my shots are single exposures and I use Kase filters for my landscape work, not to be confused with a digital "filter" from the Instagram generation.

I hope you enjoy my work and try and visit a few of these places yourself.

Why Dorset ?

As you can probably tell, I really do have a thing for Dorset, it's such a beautiful county. The Jurassic Coast is my main interest here and it's where I feel at home and at my most creative; we are so lucky to have such a fantastic stretch of coastline with so many features to shoot. For a photographer it really is heaven, but even if I don't have my camera I love to walk along it and just take in the sights and feel of the place. Sandy beaches are great for sunbathing but not so much for a photographer, Thats where the rocky Jurassic coast comes in, so it really is a dream location to live.

I have ventured to many other places, but Dorset is where I am pulled back to every time.

My Gear

I started shooting with a Canon EOS 500N in the early days which was a film camera and I was very anti the digital era but later the benefits of digital couldn't be ignored. Instant feedback on your images was too good to miss so I upgraded to a Canon 600D which was a great learning curve to my digital experience. When I became serious about it I realised that I just had to go the full frame route and got a Canon EOS 5D MKII which was superb and did me a great service for several years till I got hit with a wave while shooting and destroyed my beloved camera.

So to the present day I now use a Canon EOS 5D MK III which has been simply amazing. The performance of this camera has to be seen to be believed; I have a variety of trusted lenses which I will list below. I also use Lee & Kase filters to help balance the sky on my pictures, again these were another huge eye opener for me and they really are one of the greatest additions for any landscape photographer.

Since originally writing this I have now upgraded to the Canon EOS R mirrorless system and the RF 24-105, RF 15-35 lenses and an EF 100-400 for longer range.

Again since writing this I have once again upgraded to a Canon EOS R5 and im loving it !

While having decent gear doesn't make you a good photographer overnight it certainly helps you if you learn how to use it to your full advantage.

For most of my shots I use Canon's 15-35 F2.8 L series lens which has been superb and a massive step up from my old 17-40mm F4 L series. I also use a 24-105mm F4 and 70-200mm F4 for the landscape shots. I have a handful of other bits and pieces but I wont bore you with that.

One of the most important pieces of kit you should buy is a decent set of waterproof clothing, there is no such thing as bad weather, just poor clothing choices ! A decent pair of Gore-tex walking boots is also a must !

What's Next ?

I haven't really ever pushed myself to have images featured in press but I have been very lucky to have been asked by some very reputable publications, i'm also not a fan of social media but felt I had to join because otherwise I will get left behind a bit.

That said I have enjoyed not going on social media in recent times and just going back to basics and enjoying the photography for me. So where to go from here ? Well, I would like to branch out to some further locations and try and build a similar portfolio for another county. I love spending time in Wales and feel that the country has so much to offer with seemingly unlimited waterfalls, rocky bays, fabulous mountains and lakes and of course the Brecon Beacons & Snowdonia. I intend to spend as much spare time as I can around Wales so watch this space and hopefully I will be able to bring you a nice image or two.

Thank you to everyone who has taken the time to look through this web site and for the continued support I have been lucky enough to get.
