Well I finally seem to be getting the landscape photography mojo back and getting out a bit more ! And what better way to encourage this than a trip to mid Wales to the Elan Valley. I have been thinking about photographing the Elan Valley for a good year but hadn't ever managed to get up there, many things have stopped me in the past, The Brecon Beacons being one of them which I had to go through in order to get to the Elan Valley and that alone was a huge obstacle as I could
Welcome back to everyone and I hope you all had a fantastic Christmas and wish you all a very Happy New Year. 2017 was an interesting year for me as far as landscape photography went, I left the coast alone pretty much all year and concentrated on inland areas mainly due to wanting a change and because of my beloved puppy who I felt wasn't ready for dangerous swelling seas and cliff tops just yet, instead we just got chased several times by killer cows ! So much for inland be
The familiar sound of the 5 am alarm call rang in my ears and I hurried to look out of the window after the weather forecast of snow last night, It was a big disappointment, there was none. Snow had been replaced by driving rain and gusty winds, I was not amused in the slightest. There was only one way to deal with a situation like this, console myself with a full english breakfast and go on a location scout again. Wednesdays weather was looking fowl and time was ticking away
This week I thought I would do a review of a product that all landscape photographers should own, The polarising filter. So why should you own one of these ? What can they do to improve your photography ? Can you live without one ? All questions I hope to be able to answer and give you a bit of background into as well. What is a Polariser ? The basics of a polarising filter are pretty simple really, it’s a small filter that goes in front of the lens that when twisted will rem
Hello again and thanks for checking out my blog. If you're here you've probably found it by chance or your one of the loyal readers who come back every week and who can't be thanked enough for supporting me :) So this week its all about that photographers favourite, the seascape. So what is a seascape ? Why are they so loved by photographers ? What can you do to improve yours ? All questions I hope to be able to give you some help with. So what is a seascape then ? Well, it's
Well, hello again everyone :) I hope you enjoyed part one, my guide to the waterfalls of Wales, Part two isn't a guide but more of an account of my experiences and where I went for my week in Wales. I also hope you have got a good few minutes spare as it's a long one this week ! First of all I need to say how lucky I was here and that I landed firmly on my feet and karma had paid back in full. The main reason being I had a week off and wanted to originally go to Wales and sho
Well what can I say ? It's been one of the most amazing weeks i've ever had. So much has happened I will have to split this blog into several parts to get it all in ! So to start with I thought i'd do a guide to some of the stunning Waterfalls in Wales and how to navigate them and shoot them. So to start off with Wales has so many waterfalls where should you start ? Well how about if I told you that you could go to one place and see four epic waterfalls in a short two or thre
Hello everyone, and once again thanks for reading my landscape photography blog. I have had a request from a couple of people to do one based on the photographers favourite capture, the sunrise & sunset and how to get the most out of them, So heres my top tips to improve your pictures of the golden hour. 1. PLAN, PLAN & PLAN It might sound like such an obvious thing but it can be overlooked by so many. So what should you plan for ? Do you have a shot in mind ? Is it just a lo
Well, I thought i'd give the technical stuff a break this week and tell you what i've been up to and what i've got planned for the next few weeks. Sadly it's that time of year when shooting every day becomes a major problem. The light starts to fade before you finish work, and your already on your way to work when the sun rises. It's a very frustrating time when the only opportunity you will get to shoot is on the weekends, couple that with the fact that it will be glorious w
This weeks blog i'm going to take a look at the Histogram, What is it ? Why should you be using it ? When to use it ? And how it can improve your photography. First of all don't be scared by the histogram, It really is your friend and can tell you a wealth of information about your photos and what is missing and how to improve them. Yet it seems to be rarely used by a lot of people as it sounds and looks fairly complex, But in reality its far from that. I rely on it to give m
Well, this promises to be a controversial topic, and the irony is not lost on me that I'm sharing a topic about social media on social media ! Love to or hate it social media is here to stay, but is it a good or bad thing ? Lets take a look on the pro's and cons of the platform that can make or break you. Pro's Well, lets be honest, never has it been so easy to get your work seen by so many people, you can put a single picture up and within the hour it has been shared all rou
I was asked the other day "what filter did you use for that picture", to which I replied a Lee 0.75 hard graduated filter. They looked blankly at me and somewhat confused, I asked them what was wrong, and their reply astounded me......."I've not seen that on Instagram, where do you get it from". To say I was horrified was an understatement, so I decided to explain what a filter actually is to a photographer and not a person of the Instagram generation. A Neutral Density Gradu
So a lot of you do fantastic pictures and get them featured on some form of media or another, be it Facebook or a news paper or a web site etc... We all love it when we get a message from a publication praising our work and then the elation of them asking if they can feature it in their magazine, you are overjoyed that your work has been recognised and someone wants to pay to feature it right ? Wrong, because its usually followed by "we don't pay for pictures but we will put
Sea of Gold, Turlin Moor, Dorset. Well for once i've managed to get out quite a bit and get a few decent shots as the weather has played ball. Most of the photographers out there will know the feeling of when all the elements are looking like they are coming together and its going to be a special sunrise/sunset so they grab the kit and rush out to their chosen location only too see the weather changing right before they get there and that sinking feeling of disappointment tha
Really proud to have been asked for some images for www.heredajo.com to go on their site promoting the Jurassic Coast. Everyone needs a bit of help from time to time and sometimes just a little reminder goes a long way to improve your pictures so here's 5 tips to get your images looking better. 1. Light, light, light This is the main frame (pun intended) of any photograph, without good light your image will appear flat and not really that interesting. So what is good light ? How do you get it ? what do you do with it ? All questions you need to understand before you can get the best out of it
I'm not usually one for doing night trips but i just fancied it for some reason. There are multiple locations around Dorset that offer dark sky conditions well away from light pollution of the major towns and are well worth exploring especially as the Perseid Meteor shower is taking place at the moment. I would have happily gone to one of these locations and shot the Dorset dark skies hoping to score a meteor or two but the forecast said there was going to be a very short win
After a couple of failed trips to get a shot of the gorgeous Heather on the heath i finally managed to get one ! i am really hoping for some nice misty mornings to shoot the heather if possible in the Autumn but this will do nicely for now. There is something special about the glow of heather in the golden hour, soul replenished for another week :) #danielwrethamphotography #canoneos5dmkiii #photography #Dorset #Heather #canfordheath #sunset #starburst #sky #sunrise #canfordh
A trip to Knowlton Church produced a few images this week, was very nice to see the wild flowers in bloom. This place is a real hit or miss venue for me, i still haven't quite got the shot i want from it yet and I'm guessing i won't till winter time when i will make a return here, it seems to be getting more and more popular in recent times with photographers but tonight i was fortunate enough to have the place to myself, heaven. I hope you like. #leefilters #sunset #canon163
